Thank You Mike, we did check the linkage and the problem continued when
shifting at the trans and not using the linkage at all.

Best regards,

Larry et al,
Unfortunately, I too had a problem with the shift linkage which was set up
wrong when I bought the boat. While replacing the throttle linkage the
"mechanic" suggested also replacing the shift linkage since he had the
pedestle apart..which he screwed up as well. He set the shift linkage
without enough clearance which eventually burned up the plates. We lost
reverse primarily when it was cold and and then totally, not a good thing
with a tail wind coming into the slip. I debated just putting a new one in
since it cost roughly the same, but had a local trans shop with experience
with marine transmissions rebuild it. I found a pressure plate on line that
saved some on the job. I decided to keep the old tranny since I was having
trouble setting up the maxprop pitch and the new transmissions had a
different ratio, also I knew everything fit. I was in the process of
replacing the fuel tank, so with that out of the way I had great access to
the trans. Getting the coupling off was difficult still, but a puller
eventually did the job. Also replaced the shaft seal since I had everything
apart. Tranny works great now. I read the Hurth manual cover to cover but
didnt have the guts to do it myself. If you rebuild it yourself my hat is
off to you. Bottom line is to make sure the linkage is set correctly.

Good luck,
