[C38] dehumidifier

I got ours from Sears or Fry’ basic home unit with the option to put a hose on the back, I run the hose through the hole in the floor board into the bilge, Really makes a huge difference keeping the smell out of the boat. I run mine from shore power directly to the humidifier rather than plugging into the boats antiquated old and corroded AC wiring. I also think that running from the dock to the humidifier helps keep down on galvanic corrosion as the circuit is isolated. Last year when I was running it off the boats circuit I noticed quite a bit of white oxide powder below and above decks, since switching nothing. Also last year burnt our one of the outlets from overheating due to corrosion on the terminals….scared me enough not to do it again.

I have one....think I got it from Fry's. Clever idea to drain to bilge. Mine has a reservoir and shuts off after filling....probably 2 or 3 quarts of water. I am not sure I'd want it to drain to bilge because it may never shut off.

Makes those blue containers that contained those white granules seem ridiculous.

I bought one from Sears, it's rather large and a bit heavy BUT it does a great job. I plumbed it to drain into the bilge, I put mine right by the head door with the head door open, closet doors open etc. I didn't realize how much water we get inside the boat from the humidity until the 2011 Trans Pac and Steve Smolinski came down from the Seattle area to do the race. One of my crew members picked one up for Steve and I was amazed at how much water came out. I think they are well worth the bucks.

I am looking at getting a dehumidifier for the boat. Any suggestions on what size to get and where to locate it on board? Olympia, Wa. gets pretty damp and wet in the winter.
