[C38] Solid Vang / Main Halyard Question

Mark,

We have a Garhauer boom vang, it was easy to install and we love it.

We are redoing our deck layout one of the items is moving the cabin top
winches aft an inboard as far as they will go,(works for racing but also
allows trimming the main with the dodger up) The we will be double
ending the mainsheet to both winches. Port side winch has a rope clutch
and shares the winch with the main sheet and topping lift. The
starboard side winch is for main sheet only. Starboard side winch allow
an emergency dump of the main without having to mess with a rope clutch.
I think a cam cleat would not be substantial enough to hold the
mainsheet in a breeze, you need to imagine sharing one winch between the
halyard and sheet and trying to reef in 25+ A rope clutch at a minimum
I think if you are going to share the winch. I left the main halyard on
the mast so that shorthanded it is easier to reef, drop the boom in the
cockpit, go forward, drop the main, reef and hoist, All can be done by
one person.

Subject: [C38] Solid Vang / Main Halyard Question

Hey all... Happy holidays.

Curious... I just installed a stack-pack, and now I'm looking to ditch
my topping lift in prep for eventually running my main halyard back to
the cockpit... So I have 2 questions.

1. Does any one have a solid vang?.. or specifically a BoomKicker?
http://www.boomkicker.com/ Boomkicker looks to be the most cost
effective and easily installed solution to a solid-vang-type system.
Anyone out there have one?

2. Running main halyard back to the cockpit... If I do so, and use my
existing main sheet winch on the house as the halyard winch. How do I
control the main sheet while I'm hoisting? Could i simply install a cam
cleat to hold the main sheet steady while I'm hoisting?

Thanx,
