Rudder post. I hit a log this winter doing 11.5 kts across the ground and bent mine back and the rudder would not turn. I threw the anchor out and went over board and found the rudder up against the hull. Took a hacksaw and shaved part of the top off and went on my way. Hauled the boat and had the insurance company look at the damage. Tried to get a rudder from Catalina but after several months found out they shiiped the molds to Florida and have lost them. So I had a company in Canada build me a new (highaspect ratio)rudder. I havnt put the new on on yet and have been racing all season with my old one that is shaved and bent and have been winning alot and have not seen any performance differences. Side note several boats hit logs in the columbia this winter and were totaled because of structure damage. I had my keel area ultra sounded andeverything was intact. Also the other boats rudder were destroyed. I will take my old boat over a new design any day. They jsut dont make them as strong as they used to.

Thanx for all the info guys.

I'll see what I'm up against when I pull the boat this Sat.

If I do end up having to pull the rudder? how do I do it?

Anything to watch out for? Any instructions anywhere I could look at?

Thanx again,

We pulled the boat and the service guy said try a come-a-long to bend it back as I only had to bring it back 1/2 to 3/4 of an inch. I had nothing to loose. It worked fine and that was five or six years ago, still going strong just had it inspected. May ant to give it a try.

Seems to me our boats are getting older and I begin to think of corrosion and pitting of the stainless post, which obviously leads to weakening of the post.  So working the post back and forth without viewing the damaged area doesn't seem to be the best course of action.  However, it would be the most economical.

Mark I did the same thing only I went backward down a wave and bent mine would only turn one way. Hi Mark, before I ?bought ?Estancia, I had a Spirit 28, when ready for a weekend trip I shifted to forward, and there was a log in between the rudder and prop. The result was a bent prop blades, bent shaft, bent strut and bent rudder post, part of the fiberglass and foam were missing.

I took the rudder to a shop, they straighten it with a hydraulic press, and I made the foam and fiberglass repair. That was 12 years ago. The boat now belongs to a friend, and the rudder is still in very good shape.
If you are making offshore passages, or racing in heavy or open seas, I'll probably get a new one, but since you are always sailing in the Chesapeake, I'll give it a try and just repair it.

Good luck, and Hope this helps.
