I second Steve S response about sailing directly down with with big seas- it is hairy.  My favorite is a .75 oz tri-radial from Quantum Sails.  I have reached on flat water, low wind at 90 degrees and sailed directly down wind at 25 kts air reaching 12.6 kts (our max), surfing down big swells with one man actively working the sheet- it's scary, but thrilling.Cheers, Steve O

Bob I think the deepest dw angle on our polars is 174 even that deep she is squirrelly. If you go big o. The shoulders it's more of a dedicted dw sail.  Narrower a d you ca. Reach some.   This would be a good post for cliff to jump in as he probably is the most knowledgeable on shape a d design.  My symmetric spinnakers are tri radial.

Gentlemen, I am buying a new spinnaker, I have several old used ones bought over the years.  In your opinion what is the best down wind cut. 140 degrees to straight downwind,180 degrees.  I use a pole and four sheets.  The sail will have a sock. thanks in advance bob

Bob,
On Macavity a straight downwind spinnaker would get as much use as
a sterling silver tea service. The C-38 is not a straight downwind boat.
We try to avoid using a chute closer to dead down than 165 degrees. We
usually start the no-go zone at 155 degrees. We have no conventional
chutes - assymetric only for that reason. I do not mind a little
excitement from time to time but notice that my helm control diminishes
when the rudder rolls out of the water. Joe

Bob,
I'm in agreement with the other comments on going dead-downwind. After about 165 deg it gets really exciting. Kind of like sailing a beachball with a rudder on it. Bear off a bit and go for controlled speed. Then you get to practice your jibes!!

Fair winds,
Dave?
