"All that carbon fiber is really strong until it isn't. Then it fails
catastrophically ..."

This reminds me of a few years ago when the St. Pete Yacht Club was
hosting a regatta and one of the custom racing boats with a tall carbon
fiber mast took a direct lightning strike. My boat was only 150' away
and at first we thought we were hit. We saw commotion on the YC docks
and ran over to help.

No one was hurt but the racing boat was taking on water and the only
evidence they ever had a mast was a tangle of shrouds on deck and a pile
of black dirt, formerly high priced carbon fiber mast material, around
where the mast used to pass through the cabin top.

Everyone was amazed at how the mast turned to dust and fiber hair in
nanoseconds.
