Hi Bill, so goo to know that you are keeping your boat and making it even better!

I have a Raymarine ST4000+ autopilot, but this one has no course computer, but if I have installed a couple like yours on other boats, and I was thinking that the right location for the cour computer is exactly were you just mentioned. Near the trash door..
The flux gate compass is installed in the galley. If you open the small door under the sink, the flux gate is installed a few inches above the top right corner of this door, attached to the wood enclosure for the drawers on the side...

I know that is kind of close to the stainless sink, but that's as good as it gets on my boat..
Some people have installed it under the port settee, as far as possible from the engine, but I have a big stainless fresh water tank in that location, so I had to stick to the sink location.

Hope this helps!

Regards,
