Sorry gang, I meant this reply to go to Joe Launie, not the whole
group. I wasn't paying attention.

Hello Joe,

Thank you for the reply. As I guess you guess, I am an avid shooter and
have been since a child.

The gun I used to carry most often on my 38 was a folding stock
stainless Mini-14. I could shoot it like a pistol if needed and a fun
gun to shoot any time. For offshore entertainment we would sometimes
tie a 4# fishing line to an empty beverage can and tow it behind the 38.

The can would fill with water but never sink since it would trap some
air and the forward motion of the boat kept it near the surface. The can
would disappear below a wave and then pop toward the boat giving less
than a second of flight time before it hit the water again.

Hitting the can with a little 55 grain bullet at over 3000 fps would
cause the can to explode when hit, very theatrical!

Today that gun is topped with a night vision scope and I have used it
for feral hog hunting. Night hunting is legal here in Georgia for feral
hogs or coyotes. I usually shoot a hot 62 grain reload. The bullet is
a little heavy for my old 1-12" twist barrel but it still seems to be
pretty accurate just the same and better terminal results on a thick
skinned hog.

Any other time than hunting, the Mini-14 is available and ready for home
defense.

I was in the Navy on the USS Yosemite and we had a pistol team which I
was on. We used issue 1911A1 Colts which our captain allowed us to
accuratise with better sights, bushing, barrel and trigger. The guns we
used were ships property and I always wondered whatever happened to
those highly modified guns. They looked old and worn but shot like
expensive custom 45's. It was like showing up at a cockfight with a
duck and winning!
