I?m sorry for flooding the list with my introduction (5 times does seem excessive). It seemed to take quite a while to get through. As I stated, I am currently boat less and saving boat bucks while in retirement. I plan to have enough to buy my next boat in two years. And the C-38 has always interested me since I first went aboard one at the Catalina dealer in Tacoma, WA around 2004 I think. At that time I was delivering a used C-34 from there to Everett, WA for the new owner. I live in Eastern Washington State but will keep my next boat in Poulsbo, WA in Liberty Bay on Puget Sound.
Anyway, I just bought a new Andersen 52ST compact power winch for my next boat. I couldn?t resist the low price ($3900) Defender had on this one and it was one of the items I planned to add to my next boat. I?m hoping to mount it to the cabin top and use it primarily as a halyard winch with the ability to lead any other lines to it if needed. I might eventually add more electric winches as money becomes available after I get my next boat. So, my question to the group? Does putting this winch on the cabin top make sense?

Hello all,
I just joined your email list. I do not currently own a boat. I sold my Catalina 27 in November 2014 so that I could better save money to buy a larger and roomier boat for cruising and possibly living aboard. My goal is to buy a boat in March of 2017. I should have enough saved up then to pay cash and have some left over for a few upgrades. I hope to keep my next boat at the Port Of Poulsbo marina in Poulsbo WA. I have been looking primarily for boats around 36-38 feet LOA and I?ve always liked the S&S Catalina 38 and would love to own one. I don?t plan to start looking seriously at boats until September of 2016. But I am trying to gather as much info as I can get as to what issues to look out for when inspecting potential boats. I plan to have a general survey done on a potential candidate. Then, if that survey doesn?t show any deal-stoppers, I?ll have a diesel survey, a rigging survey, and an electrical systems survey.
I have been a sailor in Puget Sound area since 1998 when I bought a 1976 Catalina 22. I sold that in 2011 and bought a nice 1971 Catalina 27. I?ve done many upgrades to both boats and have helped others upgrade their boats. Last summer I spent 3 months aboard cruising British Columbia waters and the San Juans. I found the space in the C27 to be too cramped although I really enjoyed the boat. I?m a retired machinist and have become a part time rigger and boat mechanic to help supplement my past-time of sailing.
