[C38] Under Contract - Some questions

the owner passed away in 2013 and I don't think the family did a very good job with putting the boat away.  it was stored with several inches of water in the bilge.  freezing and thawing may have contributed to the stringer issue.  not replacing the very old exhaust hose is what lead to raw water all over the back of the engine...

Danny
What is the boat's name and where is she located.  Maybe someone on the list will know something about her.

I wonder if that boat was sunk or semi sunk from a storm. At the very least, it sounds like it was neglected for too long. Sounds awful to me. You would have to enjoy working on it to make it worthwhile bringing it back to a nice condition.

Hi guys,  well the survey did not go very well.  the surveyor sounded the hull, the deck, the cockpit, and all was going very well.  then, he went below and looked in the bilge.  all the stringers and the mast step have separated from the hull.  the whole fiberglass sole would need to come out and the stringers re adhered and tabbed back down and the mast step repaired and the sole re installed.

the engine would not start,  the whole back of the engine got sprayed with salt water and was terribly corroded and we could not get power to the engine.  there was a hole in the exhaust hose...

we could not get power to the house either.

the engine would need to come out and allthe corroded clamps, connectors, parts, cleaned or replaced.  the main harness needed replaced and then probably re wire the whole boat.

I may be walking away from this one...

I have the "flush with deck" option.  It mounts as close to the deck as possible, but like all deck mount roller furlers.... it reduces the size of sail you can rig.    Our forestay length is almost as long as our 155% headsail.

Can you elaborate a bit more on the close to deck configuration?  is that an option in the setup or some kind of extra...?

Thanks Danny

Danny,
You will love the boat as it has the pedigree to do what you describe.

1. I have had a profurl for over 10 years and over 20,000 miles with no trouble.  You do need to go with the close to the deck configuration.
2. Steve Smolinske really likes Island Planet sails and I personally know how fast his boat is!  But, are many sailmakers out there and we all seem to have preferences.  If money is short, shop Bacon Sails or Minney's for used sails.  Sometimes you get lucky!
3. Now that I have a dodger and bimini.....  what the hell was I thinking all those years sailing without it?  I guess I just like rolling dice with melanoma?  Best way is to have one custom fitted.  Make SURE you can see the sails, sea and other boats!
4. The mast step fix is on our website.
5.  Make sure the surveyor sounds your deck for voids and checks for moisture.  I would be surprised if there was none as we have a cored deck and cabin.  Unless things are real bad, this should not be a deal killer.  Just get it fixed.
Have the surveyor look at your rigging, especially around turnbuckles.

Best,

Hi Guys,

After an unusual round of interactions, I've finally come to terms on a price and about to sign a P&S and schedule a pre purchase survey.  I'm pretty excited about the prospect but, still willing to walk away if the survey goes bad, (or worse than I have imagined).

Anyway, just trying to gather some info about things we'd need pretty quickly if the deal goes thru.

1. New standing rigging and a roller fuler

I'm looking at a Profurl on closeout from Defender currently and I'm going to try and contact the guy that rerigged my previous boat

for the standing rigging.  Any insights or comment here?

2.  I believe it will need a new headsail pretty quickly too.  when the seller says it is "fair" it needs replaced...  I see some available on

line for delivery.  Is that a good idea?  We're not racers but we like spirited sailing and don't really go home at 25knots...  I'm

thinking a 135 working sail will do us nicely.

3. A bimini is really important to us.  It this something we can get from an on line source?  Or, is that a bad idea?

4. The mast step seems to need attention.  I think someone here has a pretty detailed how to on that.  The existing one seems to be

a shaped block of wood.  Any good pointers here or where I could find that how to?

5. Any particular things or areas of focus I should make the surveyor aware of?

Thanks for any comments, suggestions or insights guys.

Danny
