Hey folks!
I got a weird phone call today from the publisher of our magazine (Catalina Mainsheet). It appears the person David is discussing (below) contacted them and said he was the Catalina 38 organization! I explained our short association with this new owner and how it turned out. Publisher was more than a little shocked someone would do this and assured me we remain the Catalina 38 Association associated with the magazine..... He related that in all the years he had been doing this No One has tried this!
Guess it takes all kinds, but do be aware this guy is out there (Facebook for example) and do let our people know what is up with this guy if it does come up!

And now I get back to my plans for re-doing the outside teak this spring. I am taking it down to bare wood and the first coat is Smith's penetrating epoxy sealer..... Then 6 coats of the best poly.
Tried it last year on a club boat and the result was amazing!
Anybody else tried something like this?

Garth,

I think a little context is in order here. The C38 association is a small organization, made up mostly of people who own (or have owned) C38s and want to be in relationship with other C38 owners. Everyone who is has a role in the association is a volunteer, and in most cases are amateurs in the areas they are contributing. No one makes any money from the association or any of its activities, in fact, members and leaders often make expense contributions in addition to paying their dues. Not to mention that most, if not all, have jobs, families and boats to maintain.

Charles has been donating his time and efforts for a number of years, again for no personal or financial gain. Yes, there have been issues with the web site and the listserve from time to time, but he always does his best to address them as timely as he can. Overall, I would say he has done a very good job, and has had a great attitude, despite his having volunteered in many ways, and with few thanks.

The dues that are paid are not for the web site, list serve or any specific benefit, but rather are a way for the members to share in the hard costs that are necessities of the organization.

The association and its members have been invaluable to many of us in a number of ways. The ability to connect with other owners to ask questions about repairs, modifications, parts, rigging and even best sailing or racing practices is priceless. The archived postings allow members to research information and tips in minutes, finding answers that are specific to C38 boats. The C38 literature, manuals and documentation on the web site is great. It is not uncommon for members to send parts and equipment to each other, or even to get together to help each other out. We have facilitated regattas and cruises in many places across the country over the years. Members have sailed with each other and/or helped each other to improve their sailing and racing abilities.

I would suggest that instead of being critical of the technology, our association and/or our volunteers' prowess, perhaps you might consider how you can be an active participant in the community and how specifically you can help out. If you have expertise in better member communication technologies, why not offer to make that contribution. I am sure that Charles and the other members would appreciate any help and improvements you can contribute.

Sorry for the long winded message, but I think it is important for all of us to have some perspective on the association, its volunteers, and their selfless contributions to all of us. And I, for one, would like to thank Charles and the others who now serve, or have been of service in the past.

Regards,

Hello all,

I was never able to open this attachment, never had access to the website OR the past listserve discussions. All I could ever see was the active comments.

All I did was ask for a refund, that does NOT make be the bad guy. I didn't mean to make my comments about the website public. I made the incorrect assumption that Chuck's email conversation with me was only between he and I. Although I regret making my comments about the management of the site and listserve public I will stand by those statements!

If you are satisfied using listserve more power to you. Do you realize how antiquated this method of communication is in today's electronic world?

Charles,

Thank you for trying to reasonably explain the situation and for volunteering your time.

Hello Charles,

I have never been able to access the website. The have been unable to open a search on the listserve and the information that I am seeing is only of a generic nature. I have been on many owners websites and organizations and I can tell you that the Catalina38.org<http://catalina38.org> is by far the most poorly run site I have ever seen.

I have escalated both of my payments through Paypal to a dispute status and have asked for a refund for both payments.

Thank you,

Garth

Garth,
I am a bit confused. I got you into the listserve and I know you were sent a login password..... And I sent an email to our Treasurer to have him send you a check (as promised) for your mistake regarding double paying of dues..... But, you then sent a message to the listserve (a member only benefit) that you could not log in AND you sent Paypal a notice that you have a dispute and have escalated it to a claim.
Please clarify what you are doing here. If your intention is to leave the Association we will be happy to remove you from the listserve, send the check I promised and erase what you are contesting. This has never happened before and as I told you on the phone, we are all volunteers who give our time to the organization and respond as best we can. If your expectations for service diffesr from what we are willing to provide, we certainly don't want to keep an unhappy member.
Regards,
cf
