[C38] The powerful 5424

Wow, Charles that doesn't sound like much fun! On the subject of a new engine- I don't think a 50 hp engine would make much difference in the face of a 50+ kt wind pressure. As you know (as my old mind remembers) as an engineer, the pressure increases by a factor as the square of the wind velocity- that was a tremendous force on your boat. On the original subject of the 5424 engine- we just returned from a 10 day family trip to the the San Juan Isl. (Puget Sound). We put 160 hrs. on our 5424 (1985 model). We presently have 1650 hrs on our engine. With moderate wind chop we cruise at about 5.6 kts. at indicated 2500 rpm. I can take our engine up to a max of about 3200 rpm, which I would use only as a burst of power (10 seconds or less). You have to remember the engine rpm is only a function of your alternator rpm. Therefore your engine revs vary directly to the size of your alternator pulley diameter. A long story short- it is difficult to compare boat to boat engine revs. The only way to really to check your engine revs is to get a direct hand held reading, as Steve S suggested, off the crank shaft and use this number to calibrate your gauge reading coming from your alternator. My only problem with our engine is we leak a very small amount of engine oil the first time of, say 4 hrs of continuous cruise rpm, into the bilge after months of non use. After the first day of our 10 day cruise, we had no more leakage. This tells me there is some gasket that needs re-torquing or replacing.Cheers, Steve O

Mighty Quinn just went through an intense storm with 55+ knots of wind rain hale on a Lee shore. Delta anchor dragged all over and even at full power I could not hold the nose into the wind.Lots of damage, it was just short of catastrophic as I hung on for almost an hour. This is not the first time the 5424 has left me exposed, but if I can make it through till fall it will be the last! I have already switched anchors to a rocna Vulcan which is very impressive and I will report more as I put it through various holding grounds.I will be going with a new motor as well and am thinking of of the Volo 30 horse.
I would love to hear your thoughts.

What Max said makes sense it is a 2800 max rpm engine, under no load, and if you are now getting 2500 max under load, youre probably good, (I cruise about 2200).
Are you noticing any problems? Does it still push you through the water at the same speed?

Thanks Steve. I have one of those but for some reason i havent tried it. So your suggestion is right on point. But lets say its accurate, any other suggestions?

Before tearing into it check the calibration of your rpm gauge against the engine Rpms you can pick up a unit at freight harbor that is easy to use and inexpensive. Mine currently reads all over the place. So I go by sound and feel.
