Remember the welding wire needs to be 316 I would think....

So, I’m going for the new chainplate design...Here is hard to find 316 stainless, so I’ll have to import it. It means that I’ll start the project by the end of this month.. will keep you guys posted of the process. Max,
I think this is an excellent solution, but do carefully attend to
the quality of the bolts! I would also suggest that cut out the
decking where the fitting will sit and fill it with epoxy as this
is a compression situation and the deck core is not up to this. I
would guess given the looks of the old fitting that you will find
some core deterioration and the epoxy fill may be significantly
larger than the the plate. Also, I would drill the new holes for
the fitting larger than needed as you really want any "working"
done by the rigging not to be transferred to the deck. Let us see
some photos as your progress!

Wow😮. Sounds like best day ever! 😬😬😬
I already sent this to Steve Smolinske. This is
what I’m planning to do.
I want to make the chainplates from scratch. But
without the tang, seal de deck, drill four holes through
deck/lower part of chainplate for bokts, in order to attach a
tang from a Catalina 36 from 2002+ and some other larger models.
Because of welds on each side, they seem to me stronger that
the tangs on our boats with just one weld and a bolt.
The seal will be so much better, and They could be
easily removed for inspection (No need to disassemble
port/starboard and head cabinets) What do you guys think??? I’m
also consulting with Catalina as per Steve’s recommendation.
Please don’t mind the angles of the tang on the
sketch. Is just a sketch, but that’s the plan.

That is what the chail plates on my Catalina
27 looked like after the mast went in the water, bent in
half, at wrapped arount my prop. What a great day it
was.

Max!!
I have never seen this level of corrosion! Given this
corrosion is on the tang and the base plate seems to be in
good condition.... I would fabricate another tang and
weld it to the base. I do weld stainless, but I wouldn't
trust my weld for this!
Steve fabricated larger stainless deck plates years ago
and I bought some. This allowed me to make a larger hole
in the deck which made maintenance on this critical area
easier and stopped a lot of the leaking.
Let us know!

Hi, I was wondering if anyone has replaced
the chainplates on a C38 with a different and better
design than the original.. I’m looking for new ideas..the
tang from the one in the head just broke because of heavy
crevice corrosion.. I was planning to replace all of them
but I delayed that project.. lucky me, nothing happened to
the mast while sailing 6.5 knots..
already been discussing with Steve some ideas I
have.. I’ll show you guys later.
