Hi All

Well, we've decided to replace the standing rigging after nearly 14years banging about San Francisco Bay (since the last time)  so the boat's being towed to a boatyard where the troubleshooting may continue. Thanks for all the suggestions though. I will try to be  present when the transmission is debugged. Also, we're replacing the anemometer, speed and depth transducers and indicators. We're considering the RayMarine ST60  ( https://defender.com/en_us/raymarine-i50-i60-depth-speed-and-wind-systems-pack-e70153 ). Any other suggestions are welcome.

When   we get to the bottom of this I will update you all.

More banks to rob...

Cheers

Its been eleven years.  I think the diver used a hammer to reset the bearing and then tightened the set screws.  Seems that the strut is loose where the bearing goes through.  Thanks for opening my eyes.

My cutlass drifted out of it holder and was loose on the shaft while we were in Morrow Bay.  The diver was able to slip it back on an tighten it in its proper place.  I made a similar noise in forward but not reverse.  Good luck.

Well after not having trouble since last year, the noise has returned.

We removed the old transmission fluid and put in fresh fluid. We tested the cable's throw and we could see the shaft turning in both directions. However, there's a loud groaning sound  when in forward. The sound is not present in reverse. I'm enclosing a sound clip we've recorded. Could it be the cutlass bearing? Any suggestions on how to continue troubleshooting?

Thanks for your support and regards

Hi Pierre, and yes.. is normal that the lever hits the pedestal guard, but if I were you, I go below, disconnect the cable from the transmission lever and engage it manually and make sure there it engages ok… if so, remove the binnacle in order to reach the cable assembly….
On the other side, if the problem persist when engaging directly at the transmission, you have bigger problems..

It seems to me that the lever does not have enough travel in the forward direction thus the cable which eventually selects the gear may not pull far enough. The binnacle's tubing is in the way of the forward/reverse lever so I think I may need to adjust the cable below.
