[C38] Winch replacement

Hi All. There's a 2 for 1 sale at West Marine and I've been thinking of
replacing both my jib winches. There's no access below the winches so it's
a project. Are the original winches screwed into plates or wood or
something else?
Also, should I upsize? The original are Lewmar 48s.
