I owned a 1980 C38 for 17 years and did many upgrades to it before I
finally sold it. Because the C38 has a huge fore triangle compared to the
mainsail, I found that I needed more power to handle the 130% genoa that I
raced and cruised with. I had the self tailing Lewmar 48 winches also. I
found a relatively new pair of Harken 60 3 speed self tailing winches on
Ebay which really helped trimming the genoa. Even used, they weren't cheap
and were challenging to rebuild, but they worked so well.
I believe that there was no access problem inside the port locker, but I
did cut an access hole over the quarter berth and closed it with a screw
out cover. I hope this helps and feel free to email me.
