Alden,
While we are talking about spars, has anyone put a retractable
bow-sprit on their boat for an Asymmetric chute? The current issue of
Sailing World discusses a carbon fiber retractable sprit which can be
mounted on deck without making a hole in the boat. With my existing
chute it would get the sail out from the wind shadow of the main and
make it easier to jibe. The big advantage of a 6 foot sprit would be the
ability to add 6 feet to the length of a half ounce chute to give some
much needed horsepower in light air. We race in a rating system (Club
Handicap - see last month's Mainsheet) that does not penalize for
additional sail area. This would be much cheaper than a new boat. Joe
