[C38] Binding Halyards/Mast Cap

I finally got the motor put back together and running, and now I have a
problem with my main and jib halyards; they are both badly binding. I have
no idea what could be causing this except that either the halyard sheaves
are frozen, or maybe one, or both, of the lines have come off-track (they
were fine at haul out at the end of the season). I am planning to go up the
mast tomorrow to inspect things and hope for an easy fix. If it isn't, and
I need to dig deeper inside, how does the cap come off? Can it be removed
with the mast up? I wouldn't think so because aren't the fore and aft stays
connected to it? If it can't come off, is there any way to access the
sheaves while it is on? This s_cks, I finally get the motor fixed, and now
it's something else (I guess that's what you get with a 27 year old boat).
Any advice would be appreciated.
Sincerely,
Russ Duff

Alden,
While we are talking about spars, has anyone put a retractable bow-sprit
on their boat for an Asymmetric chute? The current issue of Sailing World
discusses a carbon fiber retractable sprit which can be mounted on deck
without making a hole in the boat. With my existing chute it would get the
sail out from the wind shadow of the main and make it easier to jibe. The
big advantage of a 6 foot sprit would be the ability to add 6 feet to the
length of a half ounce chute to give some much needed horsepower in light
air. We race in a rating system (Club Handicap - see last month's Mainsheet)
that does not penalize for additional sail area. This would be much cheaper
than a new boat. Joe Launie, Macavity, Commodore

They rock, I bought two top spreaders from them they were delivered and
painted in three days (150.00). I wish I would have talked to them
before I had my mast and boom stripped and painted I could have ordered
three sets from them painted and delivered vs the cost of a local yard.
I could have had a three masted scooner 38. They now have two designs
for masts for the 38.

Well, the Mighty Quinn is now in Duluth, MN after somewhere between
1500-1900 nautical miles (tacking hard to windward was a fact of life
through most of the voyage). There seems to be some confusion
regarding
the water pump. The universal 5424 actually as two water pumps as do
all marine engines that use seawater cooling. In my case, the
internal
water pump began leaking at the seal. The bearings are great and the
confounding part is the leak has actually diminished! One clue is
that
I had just replaced the alternator that had not been working for quite
some time... I have 195 watts of solar and a 400 watt wind generator
that supply more than I ever need for the fridge, radar, etc. so the
alternator problem was masked by topped off batteries and my
willingness
to ignore all the signs! Plus, most of my sailing (until this five
week journey) had been 3-7 days. At this point, I am keeping the new
pump in reserve and will be carefully monitoring the anti-freeze
levels. So, my thinking is the new alternator may have dramatically
increased belt loading, which may have caused the stiff water pump
seal
to stress a bit and then start doing its job. (comments?)
What I have learned about water pumps: First is there are actually
two
models for this engine. One has 15 bolts holding it to the engine and
mine has sixteen (be certain you carefully count as they are not all
visible from one position). Second is this is not an inexpensive
part!
I purchased my pump from MARINEPARTSSOURCE.COM which was more than $40
less than Torrenson (exact same part). Don't forget to get the
gasket!
And be very careful regarding even torque as this part would be easy
to
damage when you are mounting it. I intend to use an anti -seize
grease
to ensure it can be removed in the future.
What would I do differently if I had the time (and already had not
bought the part): The fact is that I had to replace the entire pump
($480) assembly when the only problem was a $0.50 seal. If I had
access
to a machine or even a small engine repair shop, I am certain they
could
press out the bearing and seal out and replace them for a fraction of
what I paid.
My near term plans are to sail to the Apostle Islands after July 4 and
then on to Traverse Bay/Door County area of Lake Michigan where I plan
to leave her for the winter.
Regards,
Charles Finn

Steve,
The best tip for sail trim is to pick up the North Sails book on
sail trim. It is the best and not expensive. You can get it on their web
site. One C-38 sail trim tip is to pay particular attention to your main
sheet traveler setting. As the helm loads up going to weather and the
boat starts to heel excessively, lower the traveler. Off the wind, while
you can go DDW wing & wing, it is often faster to reach up a bit.
A good GPS will give you VMG and the trick is to maximize that. On my
GPS at the helm I have boat speed, VMG, track and bearing to the mark.It
seems to work for us. Joe Launie, Macavity, Commodore

We are heading to Barkley Sound in July for NORPAC (week of cruising
style racing) being that we have only had the boat for a few months, I
would appreciate as much knowledge and wisdom regarding sail trim that
eveyone has picked up over the years. Our sails are old but the main
and 130 have some life left in them. Flying sails are not allowed so
need to worry about getting performance from them. any and all help
is greatly appreciated. NORPAC is a Seattle Yacht Club sponsored
event and is limited to 30 boats, there is room for anyone else in the
area that would like to attend. The dates are the 20-25 of July, A
portion of the fleet will meet in Sooke on the 19th for the push to
Barkley on the 20th.
Thanks all,

Charles,
You certainly have had a long trek. When you get to Door County you
will be close to Peshtigo, Wisconsin. That is the site of the greatest
forest fire in history in 1871. You get get the story at
www.peshtigofire.info. Do not read this late at night, it is a real
horror story. The survivors accounts shown in the newspapers of the day
are especially spectacular. Joe Launie,,Macavity, Commodore

Russ is right, it is Lafriel and I believe they are still in business in

Hi Larry,
The C38 masts were made by Lefiell. If you`re going to contact them, ask
for
Don. He has a C38 and he would know exactly what you will be talking
about!
