[C38] Emergency tiller

I have had the misfortune of having to use my emergency tiller back in 1993 shortly after I purchased the boat. The steering failed as a very windy thunder shower was passing through Tampa Bay late at night during a sail change and we were still several miles out from our dock.

After I got the steering cable free from the steering quadrant to free the rudder using a Mini Mag flashlight in my teeth, I installed the short stubby emergency tiller that came with my boat and sailed most of the way back to the marina on reduced sail before we cranked the motor for the last 1/4 mile to the dock. Even though the emergency tiller is short, it did the job.

The reason our steering failed was the wooden stop for the quadrant had become soft and allowed the rudder to turn too far allowing the cable to slip off the groove rendering the steering wheel useless.

I replaced the original wood 2x4 stop with a painted aluminum angle stop with rubber cushions where the quadrant meets the new aluminum stop. The quadrant stop is bolted below the cockpit near the binnacle and like everything on our boats, the steering stop is a #$%^! to get to but getting that soft wood out and replaced with an aluminum stop was a worthwhile project.

On Legacy, hull #360, the emergency tiller goes in a round socket at the top of the rudder shaft. We just have a short piece of pipe as an emergency tiller but it's really too short to steer by hand as it has to clear the wheel pedestal. I thought about welding up one with a big jog in the middle to clear the pedestal.

Hi Mike,

You can make your own emergency tiller. It is very simple. Some wood, couple of stainless steel plates, three bolts, and that`s all it take to make one. Attached is the diagram from Catalina.
Hope this helps.

I have a 1984 Catalina38. My wife and I bought her about five years ago. We've done some sailing outside the gate but it's a little scary when you don't have an emergency tiller.

Where would you acquire such a thing. Also, I am in dire need of new sails and with money a little tight where would I get a set of used but good sails for sailing San Francisco Bay.

I would like to sepaerate the coupling on my engine 5424 type, It is held together by four bolts that I removed but the coupler will not come apart. I am worried about damage if I force it apart. The coupler has llarge bolts with rubber washers on the circumference, I don`t think these are to be removed? Currently I am soaking the shaft set screws with penetrating oil, as I can`t budge them, next is to seperate the coupler, any advice would be greatly appreciated. bob

Bob, seems like the shipyard had to heat the bolts on our coupling and then
cut them off, I don't know if they used a torch to cut them but I do know
they had a heck of a time getting them off.
