[C38] Emergency tiller

On Legacy, hull #360, the emergency tiller goes in a round socket at the top
of the rudder shaft. We just have a short piece of pipe as an emergency
tiller but it's really too short to steer by hand as it has to clear the
wheel pedestal. I thought about welding up one with a big jog in the middle
to clear the pedestal.

Hi Mike,
You can make your own emergency tiller. It is very simple. Some wood, couple
of stainless steel plates, three bolts, and that`s all it take to make one.
Attached is the diagram from Catalina.
Hope this helps.

I have a 1984 Catalina38. My wife and I bought her about five years ago.
We've done some sailing outside the gate but it's a little scary when you
don't have an emergency tiller.
Where would you acquire such a thing. Also, I am in dire need of new sails
and with money a little tight where would I get a set of used but good sails
for sailing San Francisco Bay.

I would like to sepaerate the coupling on my engine 5424 type, It is
held together by four bolts that I removed but the coupler will not come
apart. I am worried about damage if I force it apart. The coupler has
llarge bolts with rubber washers on the circumference, I don`t think these
are to be removed? Currently I am soaking the shaft set screws with
penetrating oil, as I can`t budge them, next is to seperate the coupler, any
advice would be greatly appreciated. bob

Bob, seems like the shipyard had to heat the bolts on our coupling and then
cut them off, I don't know if they used a torch to cut them but I do know
they had a heck of a time getting them off.
