Mike, I put an average of 400 hrs a year on my 38 on the water cruising
and racing both inshore and offshore. I have yet to have the 38 round up
even in high winds with a lot of sail up. Now saying that the boat would
start to wobble left and right when going fast downwind with big waves
and a symmetrical spinnaker wich could have caused a death roll. But we
switched to Asymetrical sails and it solved that problem. I race with
them even by my self if you want to see some pictures I can send them to
you. The 38 is a very stable boat even compared to the new C380.

There is always the possibility of rounding up and a knock down when
running
downwind with a spinnaker. Keen helmsman will prevent this though. We
have, fingers crossed, never rounded up to that point nor been knocked
down,
close a couple of times though.

the previous owner that we should never sail her with a spinnaker. He

Hello Mike and Buck,
Our C38 is our first big boat. My family and I put 1000 miles under the
keel last Winter. Then I put another 1000 miles under the keel bringing
the boat up the East Coast last April. Then we spend another five weeks
aboard as a family this Summer past.
Love love love our boat. Great sailer and a great value. Good looking
too!

Russ, Thank you very much for your input. I have considered the tankage
issue. Water maker would be one of the first additions. My C-27 has a 20
gallon
waste tank, so I'm already dialed into that situation. BTW I have
averaged
over 250 days a year under sail since I've owned my boat. I need an
"excuse" to
stay tied to the dock. ;-) Definitely not a dockside condo. Thanks
again.

Michigan. There were four of us; my wife, 2 ? year old son, 4 year old

and myself. Oh yeah, and our two cats. It actually wasn?t too bad. I

the
water
and waste tank sizes. Once I added a city water hook up, the fresh
water
was taken care of, now the only hassle to deal with was the holding
tank.
Though this gives you a good excuse to take the boat out: ?Gotta? go
pump
out so
I might as well take her for a sail.?

I've been reading your post with great interest. I'm the proud owner of

C-27 #5966 and am looking to move up and out in my sailing adventures.
The
C-38 has caught my eye. I'm a relatively new sailor, four years now.
I've
raced
(beer can) on my C-27(solo) as well as crewed on a J-22 ("we" have the
local
cup for two years running) I've also crewed on an IP370 across the Gulf
of
Mexico as well as trailered my C-27 to BC (Solo-Gulf Islands to
Desolation)
for
a couple of months this past summer. Now back in Colorado freezing my
buns
off. Anyway limited experience. I was wondering what "owners" of C-38's
would
think of having a C-38 for a live aboard / cruising boat for a solo
sailor.
I'm ready to get off the grid and have been looking for boats to
accomplish
this goal. BC was great but a little more waterline would be nice. With
my
limited experience, I still tend towards faster vs heavier
displacement,
with a
heavy dose of conservatism. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.
