[C38] Steam Cleaner

Max,
My bolts were most assuredly stainless!  I had to cut that stripped bolt 
out, which required four, separate cuts due to the spacer nuts that are 
on the bolt that support the steering gear.  This was by far the worst 
maintenance experience I have had on the Mighty Quinn.  Waaay back 
before I was a professor, I was a "journeyman" tool and die machinist, 
so I do know my metals!  So here is my take regarding why Edson used 
stainless bolts (strength being the major argument of course).

Stainless and aluminum are affected by galvanic corrosion (much worse in 
saltwater environments).  That corrosion will be governed by the ratio 
of the anode area (aluminum) to the cathode area (stainless).  Given the 
size of the bolts and the relatively small contact area... I would 
suggest their engineers figured the amount of corrosion would be within 
some spec.  Especially if there is some sort of insulator applied 
between the metals (paint being a poor one, but I noticed the aluminum 
binnacle tapered hole was painted).  Remember that our masts are 
aluminum and there is a lot of stainless attached to them as well.
Replacing stainless bolts with aluminum also requires some 
consideration.  For example you would need a 3/8 aluminum bolt to match 
the sheer strength of a 1/4 inch stainless bolt (it has to be even 
larger for bearing loads).
