[C38] fuel tank repair (Alden André)

Many marinas on the Great Lakes have floating docks made of floating
boxes of poly. These are constantly wearing and need regular
maintainence, which requires plastic welding. My yacht club even has a
plastic welder to fix our docks! Harbor Freight sells the basic welder
(you need a tank) for about $40. I believe they make airless ones
(Amazon) that do lighter work for $150. Most folks buy these to fix car
bumpers, etc. so it must be strong.
I would suggest you look for a boatyard with floating docks and inquire.

It is a two part mixture and will work for your tank forever. If it can withstand high pressure differentials and High temp differentials and expansion and contraction I think it will work on your boat. They also call it pro seal. Go to your local FBO and Aircraft Maint shop and ask if they will sell you some.

Is it possible to fix the leak with something like JB weld? I don't want to pull the tank to get it welded because big job that would be. Any suggestions?

I called Ronco and spoke to an engineer and he said that there are no adhesives that will bond the poly tank material as it is SO inert. the only way to achieve a real weld is to actually weld it with heat using a plastic rod-feed welding machine. He said that you can try to do it with a high-heat heat gun. Apply the heat till the plastic appears to sweat and hope it re-bonds. I recently found a heat activated PVC adhesive that I plan to try. Anything to avoid cutting the V-berth out to replace the tank which they still list in their catalog. I will try to remember to take pictures of my attempt to fix it and report on the results.
