Perfect, thanks!  Do you remember the size of the packing and how many rings it takes? Also what are the finer details, I would imagine if there are multiple rings that they are stacked so that the butt joints are oppossed to each other.

Steve: Get used to working upside down or like a micro-Houdini from below. 
Here is a picture of Discreet Charm's charming gland, with bolts removed and top moved up for working.
You need to replace the packing material, which is carefully inserted up inside the top end around the rudder post.
This is a difficult job until you master the details, took me two tries. Good part of the story is that when get it right, it lasts a long time.
I can send more tips, if you need them.
