[C38] Dock Lines

I replied earlier that we use 1/2" line which is wrong. Our smaller lake boat (Catalina 27) uses 1/2" but we use 5/8" lines on our 38. The 5/8" line still stretches but fits our cleats better and isn't as likely to pull the cleats out or jerk the boat severly.

We also use short pieces of fire hose as chafing guards. Our marina gets a roll of brand new hose every year and then they cut it up in 12" long pieces and give them to the dock tennants, not charge.

I secure the chafe guards with a piece of 1/8" line through a hole in the guards and tied around the cleat. Without the 1/8" line, I have seen the guards slide away from the boat when the seas pipe up but with the securing lines, they stay put and only take a few seconds to remove when needed.

Larry, I agree with Joe Launie- 3 strand nylon line gives the best combination of strength and stretch, stretch is very inportant. The bigger the line the less the stretch. In a 12 foot wide slip, we use two bow lines, two stern lines (to keep us centered in the slip) and two spring lines. The lines are all different lengths. The most chaffing takes place at the dock cleats. So as the longer line wears, it is rotated to the next shorter line until it reaches the shortest position, and discarded. A new long line (the spring) is purchased each time the longest line is cut for the next smallest line. This is a long answer for the obvious.

Larry,
We prefer 1/2 inch nylon so they will have some stretch and not transmit loads to the boat. Chaffing is easy - just slip clear plastic tubing over the lines. Joe Launie/Macavity

What is the recommended size for dock lines for our boats? West Marine has
