[C38] Bottom Paint

Steve,
I have used Vivid for about 6 years, in the San Diego area, with 2 years
between haul outs. Vivid is rated as a hard paint, but when you lightly
scrub the bottom the water turns blue, so that tells me the paint must rate
between a hard finish and ablative. We scrub every month during the summer
and 2-3 months during the cold season. To get a nice smooth bottom job, we
hand sand lightly, just once over, using a flexible auto body sand tool
(about 3 x 17 inches) with a 80 grit paper. To apply the paint it takes two
workers, one to apply the paint with a roller usually in the vertical
direction followed immediately by the second person with a tipping
applicator in the horizontal direction. This gives a finish very close to a
spray job. The Vivid being softer, sands easily, eliminating the build up
and flows well during the application process. I must admit I don't have
experience with the hard finish paints though. I will be painting my boats
bottom this June after it arrives in Olympia on a truck. I need to do some
further investigation into paint types because of the different sea
environment. So I will be interested in what you pick for paint.

Peregrine is on the hard and we are fairing the keel and sanding the
bottom, I'd love to hear recommendations from others on bottom paint.
Ablative or Hard, which brand and your experiences with them. Thanks.
