[C38] Holes in boats

I have a box of Rule pumps that have failed in the last 10 years, all out of warranty when they failed. West Marine has a store within walking distance to my dock so it was very convenient to just replace my failed pumps with another since Rule was the brand West carried at that small location. My dock is almost 500 miles from my home so I didn't have the luxury of spending time shopping for another brand of pump elsewhere.

Bottom line, from my personal experience I would use another brand other than Rule if you have the option.

By the way, we found that having two bilge pumps in the bilge, one on starboard and the other on port side of the bilge, keeps the water in the bilge to a minimum level if you are on long, wet tacks. From Tampa Bay to Key West is one tack, two or three days worth, and sometimes very wet if you get caught in a storm which is almost guaranteed in that area. Two pumps gives a measure of protection from redundancy but it also makes sure one pump is at the lowest level when heeling.

While we're talking about pumps, does anyone have a pump that they really like?

I used to have a Lovett 1200 that eventually died (had reportedly been on the boat for many years) and not knowing much about pumps at the time (3 years ago) I allowed the yard to install a Rule. The Lovett moved more water, more quickly and only left about an inch in the bilge...the Rule leaves at least 2 inches.

I switched in part because the yard said Lovett was discontinuing the pump, but I see they're still offering it on the web site. I've also heard that Rule pumps have a design life of a couple of years and, while less expensive, need to be replaced more often.

Thoughts?
