[C38] Under Contract - Some questions

Hey chuck,
Yea, I'm sure thats true as I'm on my 3rd 30+ year old boat and had to bring the previous 2 back from brink to usable, reliable vessels.  However, these Furlers are not boat specific and can be adjusted to the boat.  I think worst case scenario is the need to buy another length of extrusion or perhaps have to cut some off of what is supplied, right?
As far as forestay gauge, I'm going to replace all the standing rigging because there is no indication of the standing rigging ever having been replaced and I'd rather just re-set the clock on that particular item and not have to worry about the age so much.  That will allow me to choose what ever gauge would be good for the job and the boat.  So, I don't think, in this case, I need to worry too much about what a PO did in regard to standing rigging.
I'd like to pull the trigger on the profurl just because of the price right now.   Unless that would be a mistake.  I won't be able to return it because it is on clearance.
Danny

 Daniel,
This is where we all need to understand that our boats are used and what fits one may not fit another!  Owners do the darnedest things and you really really have to get on the boat and measure!  For example, I have seen wire rigging as well as rod rigging;  3/8 and other size fore stays; large turnbuckles and smaller ones.  You even need to measure the length of your fore stay!

Only then will you know what you need.  I prefer to do all this myself, but I may be in the minority as it does appear that Riggers are doing an excellent business!

Sorry to put it back on you, but I hope you understand why!
 cf

By the way, if you do decide to do this yourself, DO use anti-lock on the extrusion screws!

Catalina38.org is our website.  Look in Tech Tips.  Of course we would appreciate it if you would join our organization!  Click the "Join" button on our website for how to do so.
That price is impressive and make sure it fits!  I think my NC-42 cost more that twice that much!
 Best,

All modern fulers are good go for the best price, had my mast step done (found cracks in sole) cut out sole and replaced step was like wet paper with epoxied wood did not redo sole hid hole with molding cut cost looks great. Got great price on jib from Roly Tasker (north american sails) go for tri radial.

   Danny,
You will love the boat as it has the pedigree to do what you describe.

 1. I have had a profurl for over 10 years and over 20,000 miles with no trouble.  You do need to go with the close to the deck configuration.
 2. Steve Smolinske really likes Island Planet sails and I personally know how fast his boat is!  But, are many sailmakers out there and we all seem to have preferences.  If money is short, shop Bacon Sails or Minney's for used sails.  Sometimes you get lucky!
 3. Now that I have a dodger and bimini.....  what the hell was I thinking all those years sailing without it?  I guess I just like rolling dice with melanoma?  Best way is to have one custom fitted.  Make SURE you can see the sails, sea and other boats!
 4. The mast step fix is on our website.
 5.  Make sure the surveyor sounds your deck for voids and checks for moisture.  I would be surprised if there was none as we have a cored deck and cabin.  Unless things are real bad, this should not be a deal killer.  Just get it fixed.
Have the surveyor look at your rigging, especially around turnbuckles.

 Best,

   Hi Guys,
After an unusual round of interactions, I've finally come to terms on a price and about to sign a P&S and schedule a pre purchase survey.  I'm pretty excited about the prospect but, still willing to walk away if the survey goes bad, (or worse than I have imagined).
Anyway, just trying to gather some info about things we'd need pretty quickly if the deal goes thru.
  1. New standing rigging and a roller fuler     I'm looking at a Profurl on closeout from Defender currently and I'm going to try and contact the guy that rerigged my previous boat      for the standing rigging.  Any insights or comment here?

  2.  I believe it will need a new headsail pretty quickly too.  when the seller says it is "fair" it needs replaced...  I see some available on        line for delivery.  Is that a good idea?  We're not racers but we like spirited sailing and don't really go home at 25knots...  I'm        thinking a 135 working sail will do us nicely.
  3. A bimini is really important to us.  It this something we can get from an on line source?  Or, is that a bad idea?
  4. The mast step seems to need attention.  I think someone here has a pretty detailed how to on that.  The existing one seems to be      a shaped block of wood.  Any good pointers here or where I could find that how to?
  5. Any particular things or areas of focus I should make the surveyor aware of?
Thanks for any comments, suggestions or insights guys.
  Danny
