[C38] Battery bank setup

Marc,

Attached drawing is pretty current for Peregrine. I have the two house bank batteries, AGM 6 volt/220amp under the settee, the 35 amp AGM emergency battery with a switch (wired for instruments, communication and LED tricolor) and the and AGM start battery in the cockpit lazarette. The start battery since the time of this drawing has a battery switch installed and there also two ACR 7610 charging relays not just the one shown, with two all three batteries get charged when on shore power or motoring. I have found that the 220 amp bank is sufficient since everything is LED, I can sail at night with instruments, instrument lights, and the tricolor and use only 2.5 amps/hour. I also pulled all of the old 12v wiring and replaced with new 12 gauge for two reasons first was to eliminate all and any splices in runs also the old wire was not tinned, and two is the larger wire provides less resistance than the 14 or 16 you can get away with for the length of runs and draw typical for our boat size. Also if you upsize the wire if the need arises in the future for more draw on a particular circuit you're in good shape to add versus having to pull another wire set. Also attached is an article I submitted for mainsheet sometime ago about the wire upgrade for the engine, this is a rewrite of a previous article Tom T. did some time ago. Hope it helps. Best advice I can give is to research all the issues for yourself like you are doing, come up with a drawing and then have it checked by an ABYC certified electrician. That way you can do the work, understand what you're doing and rest assurd knowing it is designed properly.

Subject: [C38] Battery bank setup

I was curious as to how the battery bank setup is on the Catalina 38. On Image I have two house batteries under the settee close to the galley and an additional starter battery by the fuel tank. The house batteries are run through the AC/DC panel, the engine battery seems not to have a battery switch.

What is the original setup of the boat? How do you have your boats set up? What kinds of batteries are you using? So far my setup seems to work for me but since I need to do some significant work on the 12V system I was curious as to whether there are better ways to set up the batteries.

Thanks
marc
