[C38] The powerful 5424

Hi Kerry, for a start, the 5424 is a 2800rpm engine, so, something was really weird fourteen years ago, and more normal today, since the offset is just 300rpm. 
Measure carefully for an accurate reading on the tachometer. No black smoke, infection pump should be ok. 
Does the prop vibrate? Check for bent blades..
But first, as was advise previously, go play with a mechanical tach!
