[C38] The powerful 5424

The speed is not the same.  And in my area, ie San Francisco, Vallejo, and the delta, the current can be excessive.  Such as an 8kt out going tide usually while we are coming in.  So when we came up the coast we were running the same two bladed prop but hitting 7.2-7.5 kts.  Can't do that now.  And I'm  sure all you river rats out there know what a pleasure it is trying to get back into your marina while the tide is going out or flooding.  I would like to get my rpm back.  I will first check the hand held meter against the tach.  But where do i go from there?

What Max said makes sense it is a 2800 max rpm engine, under no load, and if you are now getting 2500 max under load, youre probably good, (I cruise about 2200).
Are you noticing any problems? Does it still push you through the water at the same speed?

Before tearing into it check the calibration of your rpm gauge against the engine Rpms you can pick up a unit at freight harbor that is easy to use and inexpensive.  Mine currently reads all over the place. So I go by sound and feel.
